A local AM has this week (26th November) expressed his disappointment at the decision to close Machynlleth Recycling Centre from January 2015 during weekly questions in the National Assembly for Wales.
The decision to close the centre, follows a joint Conservative motion which called on Powys County Council’s Cabinet to review the decision.
A motion, jointly tabled by Conservative Councillor Aled Davies, called upon the Council to review its decision to close Potters Yard Recycling Centre in Machynlleth, and to ensure that all options are considered in maintaining an equitable recycling service across the county.
Commenting on the decision to close the centre, Russell George, AM for Montgomeryshire said:
“In spite of significant opposition from residents and Conservative Councillors, Powys County Council has reaffirmed its decision to close Potters Yard Recycling Centre.
“There are now fears that it will result in an increase in fly-tipping and a reduction in recycling rates in the area as the nearest recycling centre is 30 miles away in Newtown or Welshpool.”
The AM challenged Welsh Government Minister, Carl Sargeant, this week (26 November) to allay the community’s fears that the closure would lead to more fly tipping.
Mr George added:
“I asked the Welsh Government’s Minister of Natural Resources, Carl Sargeant, to set out what measures the Welsh Government could take to allay the community’s fears that there would be an increase in fly tipping.”
“I wasn’t happy that the Minister appeared to pass the buck saying that this is a matter for Powys County Council. I would like to see the Welsh Government step in and support the residents of Machynlleth in this regard.”
