August 2022 Newsletter
Welcome to my newsletter.
I hope to have the chance to meet up with many of you over the summer period at local events and shows. For me, this time of year is always a good opportunity to catch up with people.
I want to note my very best wishes to the athletes from our area competing this summer in the Commonwealth Games. I've been enjoying watching and celebrating the amazing talent of home athletes and our friends from overseas.
If I can help you with an issue of concern, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me by email - [email protected]
Please let me know if you would like to receive my newsletter in Welsh.
Summer Shows in Full Swing
I'm pleased to see the return of our fantastic summer shows right across the county.
I was really pleased that the Royal Welsh Show was held for the first time in three years in July.
Last Saturday, I had a great time chatting to people at Dolfor and Trefeglwys Shows.
At Dolfor Show I took part in the cooking competition as shown in the image above. My congratulations to Hadyn Jones (left) who won while I came a close second! I also want to note my thanks to Jonathan Rees (centre) who compèred as well as trying his best to show us how to dissect a chicken well and make a stir fry.
I thought it may be helpful to list up and coming shows across the county:
• Thurs 11th August – Guilsfield
• Sat 13th August – Llanfyllin / Montgomery / Llangurig
• Sat 20th August - Carno
• Sat 27th August – Berriew
• Mon 29th August – Llanbrynmair
• Sat 3rd September – Llanfair Caereinion
• Sat 3rd / Sun 4th September - Newtown Food Festival
An Important Update on Vaccinations
The Welsh Government has published information about its plans for COVID and flu vaccinations this autumn.
If you are eligible for a COVID-19 autumn booster you should receive your invitation by the end of November. If you are eligible for the flu vaccine you should receive your invitation by the end of December.
It is important to note that your invitation should be received by the end of these months but the actual appointment may be after the end of the invitation period.
I have published on my website a full breakdown of the programme so use the link below to establish if you are eligible in just a couple of minutes.
Bank Closures in Welshpool & Newtown
I was extremely disappointed to be informed about the plans for the closure of Barclays Bank in both Newtown and Welshpool, and Lloyds Bank in Welshpool.
In response to the news from Barclays, I ran a survey and received over 300 responses which gave voice to the concerns of residents. I have raised concerns with both banks.
As you may be aware from previous updates, I have been campaigning for several years for the protection of banking services for residents across our county. I was pleased to have a meeting last week, along with Craig Williams MP, with an organisation (LINK Bank) that proposes to open a new banking venue in Welshpool. I will also be continuing my discussions with the Community Bank for Wales.
Buttington Incinerator Victory
I was thrilled to learn in July of the decision to refuse permission for the proposed Buttington Incinerator.
The proposal would have had a major impact on the local community and I am pleased that this has been recognised.
I want to pay particular tribute to Cllr Amanda Jenner for all her efforts to prevent the development proceeding. Amanda, residents and the Buttington Incinerator Impact Group have all demonstrated the power local people can.
