Russell George, AM for Montgomeryshire, has lent his support to Macmillan Cancer Support in advance of their flagship “World’s Biggest Coffee Morning” on Friday 30th September.
Mr George attended a coffee morning at the Senedd, where Assembly Members came together for a cuppa and a slice of cake to hear more about Macmillan’s work supporting people affected by cancer in Wales.
He has now shared a photograph holding a cuppa, as part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s #raiseamug campaign.
Mr George is now asking the people of Montgomeryshire to get involved by sharing their own #raiseamug selfie, or by hosting or attending a coffee morning in their local area, on or around Friday 30th September.
Mr George said:
“Cancer touches the lives of so many of us, whether that’s personally, or supporting friends, family and colleagues with a cancer diagnosis.
“One in three of us will get cancer and more than 130,000 people in Wales are currently living with a cancer diagnosis.
“Macmillan Cancer Support helps people from the moment they are diagnosed, with medical and practical help, as well as emotional and financial support. But they rely on donations from the public to help fund their work.
“That’s why I am supporting the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and it would be great to see the people of Montgomeryshire holding their own coffee morning – or afternoon or evening. It's a really easy and fun way to support Macmillan, and every penny you raise will help people with cancer.”
Susan Morris, Head of Services for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales, commented:
“It’s great to see our elected Assembly Members supporting Macmillan in Wales, and we have loved seeing them joining in with the #raiseamug campaign.
We’d like to thank Russell George for his support so far, as well as for agreeing to support individuals in Montgomeryshire in holding their own Coffee Morning.
“With the number of people living with cancer in Wales expected to reach 240,000 by 2030, Macmillan Cancer Support wants to ensure that, in future, no-one faces cancer alone.
“Money raised by events such as World’s Biggest Coffee Morning help fund Macmillan’s work in Wales, including funding or nurses, physiotherapists, welfare benefits advisors and our information centres in some of Wales’s hospitals, as well as campaigning for better cancer care for patients.
“Now in its 26th year, World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is our biggest annual fundraising event. Last year saw an incredible £26.7m raised for Macmillan – and we are on track to equal if not beat that record this year.”
