Montgomeryshire Assembly Member, Russell George, has welcomed the First Minister’s commitment to improve road safety conditions at Four Crosses, near Welshpool.
The comments came during this week’s (20th November) First Minister’s Question Time, when the AM raised public concerns about speeding following the construction of the bypass at Four Crosses. While the Government’s speed review of this section of the A483 is not due to be completed until 2014, Mr George asked Mr Jones whether he would give consideration to prioritising the speed review at this location and bring the process forward.
The First Minister responded by saying that he was aware of safety concerns at this location and told Mr George that he would instruct the Minister for Local Government and Communities to write to him on how this issue might be addressed.
Commenting, Mr George said:
"I have been receiving letters from concerned residents now for many months about speeding and road safety issues on this stretch of the A483.
"But every time I raise it with the minister responsible, he just points to the speed review that is being undertaken in Mid Wales which will be completed in 2014.
"I don’t believe it can be left that long because already lives are being potentially put at risk; do we really need fatalities on this stretch of road before action is taken?
"That is why I was pleased that the First Minister was open to the idea of bringing that review forward so that these concerns could be properly addressed and potential risks, mitigated."
Mr George has also been working closely with the local community council to have high visibility signs installed at the Trederwen Lane & Rhydescyn Lane junctions near Arddleen.
