Russell George, AM for Montgomeryshire, joined volunteers from CAMAD (Community Action Machynlleth & District), to learn more about the ways in which the centre’s dedicated volunteers are providing much-needed community support to build strong, healthy and inclusive communities in the Dyfi Valley.
Mr George joined Ronald Olden, a CAMAD volunteer, on his Meals on Wheels round, delivering a number of meals to residents.
Following the visit, Mr George said:
“I was delighted to be able to join Ron on his Meals on Wheels round. CAMAD volunteers like Ron provide such an important service to the people of the Dyfi Valley.
“Delivered by CAMAD and cooked by Cartef Dyfi, the Meals on Wheels service provides access to well-balanced, affordable meals to people in the Machynlleth and Penegoes area who are elderly; find themselves housebound; or are recovering from hospitalisation or illness.
“The service clearly provides a lifeline and ongoing independence for those who use the service and I would encourage anyone who is eligible to contact CAMAD to register their interest.”
From conservation and gardening to transport and befriending, CAMAD provides a range of services and volunteering opportunities with the aim of providing much-needed community support and to act as a hub for volunteering in the area.
Russell George added:
“The local voluntary sector is adopting a leading role in the provision of many community social services and this is only set to continue.
“I believe the influence of charities, social enterprises and voluntary bodies in providing local community services should be expanded, not diminished.
“The best guarantee of the independence and vigour of the voluntary sector is a healthy flow of volunteers and I would like to see a more supportive environment in which volunteering is seen as a social norm.
“If you can commit some time to support your local community through volunteering, I would encourage you to get in touch with CAMAD to learn more about the broad range of volunteering opportunities they have on offer.”
