Last week, Russell George, Assembly Member for Montgomeryshire, urged the Leader of the House, Jane Hutt, to encourage the Minister to send her officials to meet with Welshpool Town Council to discuss concerns relating to pedestrian safety and their proposed alterations to improve the town’s one-way system.
A public meeting to discuss progress against the Town Council’s requested alterations to the one-way system was also held this week (Monday 22nd June) with over 100 residents in attendance.
Mr George said:
“I understand the Welsh Government has been reluctant to meet with the Town Council to discuss the outstanding issues which are yet to be addressed by the Welsh Government and the Trunk Road Agency.
Last year, Mr George conducted a survey of people in the Welshpool area, asking for their views on the town's one-way system, and Welshpool Town Council have also previously consulted residents on the alterations they would like to see to the road layout.
Mr George added:
“I’m aware that the town council have been in contact with Powys County Council and the Welsh Government in regards to a number of proposed alterations.
“While I know views on the one-way system vary, it would seem that there is a consensus that a number of alterations would support the better flow of traffic in the town including the idea of Brook Street/Union Street becoming two-way, a proposal which the Welsh Government has previously rejected.
Following the meeting, Mr George is going to raise further points with Powys County Council.
