A local AM has welcomed the first hourly services on the Cambrian Railway line which will commence on 18th May.
The additional train services will run from Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury and will provide a long-awaited improvement in rail services for the people of Mid Wales, providing additional opportunities for residents to access key public services and a more frequent commuter service for those needing to travel to Aberystwyth, Shrewsbury or Birmingham. It will also boost tourism in the area.
Russell George, Assembly Member for Montgomeryshire, welcomed the news and paid tribute to all the groups and individuals who have campaigned for many years for hourly services to commence on this route.
Mr George said:
“I’m delighted that the long-awaited hourly rail services between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury will begin on 18th May.
“The benefits will be transformative across Mid Wales for residents, local businesses and visitors. It will provide convenience for the many residents who work across the border and it will have a positive impact for residents who have to access public services. Tourists will also be more likely to travel to the area if they have more frequent rail services which gives them flexibility over their travel plans.
“Over the years, I have consistently urged the Welsh Government to prioritise this issue, as it is clear that good quality transport connectivity is of significant economic importance to Mid Wales. I’m therefore pleased that the Minister for Transport, Edwina Hart, has engaged positively with the campaign and has played a significant role in making this hourly service possible.
“I look forward to joining Welshpool Town Council on Monday to welcome the first train from Shrewsbury into Welshpool at 1.54pm!”
