Russell George, Assembly Member for Montgomeryshire, raised the issue of post office closures in questions to the Minister for Communities, Lesley Griffiths AM, in the National Assembly for Wales (on Wednesday 13 May).
Mr George had previously been in discussions with communities and the post office in regards to providing services in Llanbrynmair, Castle Caereinion and Sarn.
Mr George said:
“I’m pleased that the Post Office is already providing a mobile Post Office service in a number of rural communities.
“However, after a series of Post Office closures, there remain communities in Montgomeryshire without a Post Office service at all.
“I would like to see the mobile outreach service extended to other communities in Montgomeryshire such as in Abermule, Trefeglwys, Forden, and Leighton and I’ve asked the Welsh Government to support the Post Office in their efforts to do this.
“While not a full replacement for permanent Post Office services, the mobile outreach vans seem to be providing an alternative which can support a number of needs for local people. It’s also important that discussions continue for permanent post office solutions.
“I’m hopeful that the Post Office will consider the viability of other locations and that it can extend its mobile service at the earliest opportunity.
“I’ve had a good working relationship with the Post Office in Wales, and I will be meeting them again soon to discuss issues about services in Montgomeryshire.”
