The Leader of the Welsh Conservative Party, Andrew RT Davies, has visited Newtown to support Russell George’s campaign for re-election as Montgomeryshire’s Assembly Member.
Visiting Newtown (Wednesday May 3rd) on his 36-hour whistle-stop tour of Wales, Mr Davies committed a Welsh Conservative Government to delivering universal mobile and broadband coverage by 2019.
The tour comes as the country gets ready to go to the polls on Thursday (5th May).
Following the visit, the Welsh Conservative Assembly Candidate for Montgomeryshire, Russell George said:
“I’m delighted that Andrew has visited Montgomeryshire and committed the next Welsh Conservative Government to delivering universal mobile and broadband coverage.
“Despite being critical to our daily lives, many residents and businesses in Montgomeryshire are still unable to access a reliable internet connection and suffer with non-existent or intermittent mobile signal, in spite of assurances from the operators that the situation will improve.
“By reforming the planning system for telecommunications we will make it easier to upgrade existing sites and develop new ones, speeding up the process so people can get reliable access far more quickly than they are able to now.
“We will also promote the take up of superfast broadband to help residents and businesses to get online and take advantage of the digital economy.”
The Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew R.T. Davies added:
“The Conservative UK Government has already announced that every UK Citizen has the right to access reliable broadband. Despite this, many in rural Wales are still without this vital resource and are not adequately serviced by mobile and internet providers.
“By delivering on our commitment to provide universal mobile and broadband coverage by 2019, this will have a vast impact on the attractiveness of Mid Wales as a viable place to live, work and do business, greatly improving the prospects for economic growth.
“I’m hugely optimistic for Montgomeryshire’s future because we have an opportunity to change the Welsh Government on Thursday May 5th. I have a simple message for voters: Wales is in desperate need of a change and communities are crying out for a new approach. So if you want to secure real change, then vote Welsh Conservative on May 5th.”
