The first households and businesses in Welshpool can now access high speed fibre broadband through the Superfast Cymru project.
Earlier this summer, Glyn Davies MP and Russell George AM met with BT’s Director in Wales, Ann Beynon, to discuss the rollout of the scheme in Montgomeryshire.
Welcoming the news, Russell George, AM for Montgomeryshire said:
“This is very welcome news and is an important development for the town.
“For too long, Mid Wales has suffered from painfully slow broadband speeds and patchy mobile coverage. I am pleased that this is now beginning to change, allowing local businesses and residents to access a range of new online services. We must now do all we can to communicate the benefits of this latest technology and encourage widespread take-up.
“Both Glyn Davies MP and I intend to have further meetings to ensure that more rural areas of Powys also receive superfast broadband at the earliest opportunity.
“However, we are aware that 4% of the most rural premises in Wales will not be covered by the Superfast Cymru scheme. Fortunately, there are a number of locally based providers in Powys who are able to provide alternative solutions to ensure that the people of rural Montgomeryshire are not disadvantaged.”
