A local Assembly Member has welcomed the Welsh Government’s decision to close eight Cambrian railway level crossings around Talerddig, between Newtown and Machynlleth.
Following a statement from Edwina Hart, the Welsh Government’s Transport Minister, Russell George, AM for Montgomeryshire said:
"I’m delighted that Edwina Hart has decided to allocate a further £3 million to the £7.5 million Network Rail project to close level crossings around Talerddig.
"It will now mean that the necessary work to the highway, two new over-rail bridges and one new river bridge, can proceed without delay.
"For many years, both Glyn Davies MP and I have pressed the case for the urgent necessity of a new access road and bridges at Talerddig to enable the railway crossings to be closed and we have also raised concerns about the fencing and safety of livestock alongside the track.
"I’m pleased that this campaign has borne fruit, that the project will now become a reality and that there will be a noticeable improvement in safety; train performance and punctuality as we look forward to the new hourly services from Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury which will begin in May."
