A local Assembly Member has called for a meeting with Barclays bosses after news that the bank intends to reduce its opening times to just three days a week.
Russell George, AM for Montgomeryshire, has gained agreement from the bank’s Head of Corporate Relations to meet to discuss Barclays’ decision to change its opening hours from the end of November.
The branch is currently open every weekday from 10am – 4pm but from Monday 30th November, Barclays intends to reduce its opening hours to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only.
Following the announcement, Mr George said:
“I'm disappointed that the bank did not feel they could discuss this matter with me. This is another big blow to Llanidloes and I will be meeting with Barclays Head of Corporate Relations for the area.
“Any reduction in the opening hours of the Barclays branch in Llanidloes would have a detrimental effect on residents and businesses in the town who have already seen the loss of the HSBC and NatWest branches.
“Small businesses, particularly those engaged in retail activity, rely on daily banking services. It is clear that online or mobile branch banking does not always adequately replace permanent “over the counter” facilities.
“I recognise the pressure which high street banks are under as a result of technological developments and other factors. All the more reason for them to come together to explore my calls for a new model of community banking which will see them share buildings and services to ensure they continue to serve their customers in rural areas of Mid Wales.”
