A local AM has reinforced calls for an urgent care centre in Montgomeryshire.
Russell George, AM for Montgomeryshire has joined calls from Glyn Davies MP in calling for an urgent care centre to ensure that patients in the area are adequately served following the review of healthcare services in Shropshire.
Questioning the First Minister on the subject in the National Assembly for Wales, Mr George asked whether the Welsh Government would consider exploring the feasibility of an urgent care centre in Montgomeryshire.
Following confirmation that the Health Minister would look into the suggestion, Mr George said:
“I am pleased that the First Minister has committed the Welsh Government to looking into whether it is feasible to create an urgent care centre in Mid Wales to serve the people of North Powys.
“Health services in Shropshire are currently under review and it is likely that an emergency centre for the treatment of serious injuries will be created, supported by anywhere between four and seven urgent care centres in Shropshire.
“Unfortunately in spite of a cross border agreement, none of these urgent care centres will be in Montgomeryshire.
“Powys Teaching Health Board should now follow the Shropshire model and look to upgrade a community hospital.
“However, if this is to occur, the Health Board needs to be properly financed by the Welsh Government to allow them to do it.
“As the debate in Shropshire in now underway, it’s time that these options are now given serious consideration, so that the people of Montgomeryshire are not disadvantaged.”
