Commenting on today’s announcement made by Powys County Council’s Cabinet that it has agreed to keep Carno Primary School open and federate it with Ysgol Llanbrynmair and Ysgol Glantwymyn and that it has deferred its decision on Llandinam Primary School until the autumn, to allow consideration of school performance following recent Estyn inspections, Montgomeryshire Assembly Member, Russell George said:
"I believe the Council’s Cabinet has taken the right and sensible approach today regarding the futures of Ysgol Carno and Llandinam.
"It’s right that Ysgol Carno stays open because the maintenance and development of the Welsh language is a very important factor to the community. The way the campaign group targeted that issue and organised its response to the Council’s consultation was excellent.
"I also think that the Cabinet has taken a sensible approach to postpone any decision on Llandinam’s future until more information on the school’s performance is properly analysed.
"The way Cllr Myfanwy Alexander has dealt with the very sensitive issue of school closures in these two cases has to be commended.
"She visited both schools to listen to concerns raised by the teachers, parents and local campaigners; for me this is positive democracy in action."
