A Mid Wales Assembly Member has hosted the Welsh Government’s Minister for Economy Science & Transport on a visit to Welshpool.
Russell George AM invited the Minister, Edwina Hart, to his Montgomeryshire constituency, to discuss the Welshpool One-Way system.
Mr George also invited representatives from Welshpool Town Council to join him to discuss the one-way system including the Mayor of Welshpool, Cllr. Malcolm Douglass, the Deputy Mayor, Cllr. Stephen Kaye, Cllr. Philip Pritchard and the Town Clerk, Robert Robinson.
Following the Minister’s visit, Mr George said:
"Following a public meeting organised by Cllr. Graham Breeze earlier this year, I invited the Minister to visit Welshpool to discuss on-going concerns relating to pedestrian safety and the proposed alterations to the road layout to improve the town’s one way system. I’m delighted that she accepted my invitation.
"I was particularly keen that the Minister visit Welshpool in person to see for herself how alterations to the road layout would be beneficial.
"Last year, I conducted a survey of people in the Welshpool area, asking for their views on the town's one-way system. It would seem that there is a consensus that a number of alterations would support the better flow of traffic in the town including the idea of Brook Street becoming two-way.
"I was pleased that the Minister was receptive to the idea of alterations being made. She committed her officials to reviewing the proposals to return Brook Street to two-way traffic and she will also consider a range of other measures to improve pedestrian safety.
"I would like to thank the Mayor of Welshpool, Cllr. Malcolm Douglass, and the Clerk of Welshpool Town Council, Robert Robinson, for hosting and facilitating the meeting with the Minister."
Following the meeting to discuss the one-way system, Mr George and the Minister also visited the visited the car park at Welshpool railway station and the Westwood Day Centre, alongside representatives from Welshpool Town Council.
