A Mid Wales Assembly Member has welcomed new investment in local transport projects after having campaigned for improvements to transport links throughout his Montgomeryshire constituency during his time as an Assembly Member.
Local authorities can bid for funding for schemes that meet certain criteria for improvements to local transport, road safety, road safety education and safe routes in the community.
After having supported Powys County Council in their application for grant funding, Russell George, AM for Montgomeryshire, welcomed almost £883,000 of Welsh Government funding for transport schemes in Powys.
Mr George said:
“I’m delighted that a number of excellent projects will now become a reality following the announcement of almost £883,000 of Welsh Government funding for transport projects in Powys.
“Throughout my time as an Assembly Member, I have campaigned for long-overdue transport improvements, including the Newtown bypass, a new Dyfi Bridge and the hourly train service on the Cambrian line.
“However, I have also supported Powys County Council in its funding application for other local initiatives and I’m particularly pleased that projects designed to improve road safety will now come to fruition.
“We all know how treacherous some of Mid Wales’ roads can be. Therefore, I welcome any measures which will improve road safety and am pleased to see that improvements along the A495 from Meifod to the Powys County border; improvements to junctions and pedestrian crossings on the B4568 in Newtown; and new walking/cycling routes in Llanfyllin have all received funding.
“I will continue to campaign for the transport improvements which are essential if the Mid Wales economy is to flourish.”
