The lack of commercial and industrial premises in north Powys is hindering the growth of the local economy, according to a number of local mid Wales businesses and Montgomeryshire AM, Russell George.
Mr George arranged a meeting between the Welsh Government Business Minister, Edwina Hart AM, the Mid Wales Manufacturing Group and a number of individual businesses from Newtown, Welshpool and Machynlleth to discuss the issue.
At the meeting Mrs Hart said she was looking into the matter and was considering options to attract more investment into commercial property.
“We’re turning the corner economically with many businesses seeking to invest and grow and yet the first barrier they face is suitable accommodation in the area,” said Mr George.
“I’m concerned that existing property is becoming out-dated, no fit for modern business needs, and in need of investment, and the number of vacant suitable premises for business growth is just not available in the Severn Valley area.
“I asked the Minister to meet local businesses to hear their concerns first hand. The minister informed us that a report is being prepared in regards to business accommodation in Powys and she discussed the possibility of Welsh Government re-entering the property market”
He added: “We need some quick decisions on this as businesses want to expand and create new employment in the area, but they are struggling simply because they cannot find suitable premises.
“The lack of being able to employ people with the relevant skills for business was also discussed, and the Minister also committed to inviting one of her Ministerial colleague’s to come to Montgomeryshire to discuss this particular matter further”
“We must retain businesses in Montgomeryshire and support existing business to grow. I was encouraged by the meeting and the positive discussion that took place."
Mr George said in the past the Development Board for Rural Wales and Welsh Development Agency had built premises for industrial and commercial use, but since there demise, government support had ceased, and the private sector hadn’t been successful in continuing such investments.
Mrs Hart met a range of companies on Thursday (20th November) during a meeting at NPTC Group’s Newtown campus where the Mid Wales Manufacturing Group is based.
