The Assembly Member for Montgomeryshire, Russell George, has attended an event (10th November 2015) at the National Assembly for Wales hosted by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), to find out how people in Montgomeryshire can secure new National Lottery money to help them mark the Centenary of the First World War.
At the event, Mr George met with Cerys Thomas, a representative of Montgomery Remembers, the making of a memorial garden, a project which has benefitted from £9,700 of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s community grants programme, First Wold War: then and now.
HLF has now made an additional £4 million available in 2015/16 for communities looking to explore, conserve and share local heritage of the First World War. Grants are available between £3,000 to £10,000.
After meeting Cerys Thomas, Mr George said:
“I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet Cerys to learn more about the project to restore the memorial garden in Montgomery.
“It’s so important that we remember the impact of the First World War one hundred years on.
“I was pleased to be able to learn more about the project which involved over 50 people to research the names of those fallen in the war, gathering stories to create a leaflet and exhibition. The project also restored an existing memorial, and created a small memorial garden which is maintained by school children and local youth groups.
“There is still time to apply for National Lottery money so I would urge anyone in Montgomeryshire with an idea for their own project to get in touch with the Heritage Lottery Fund.”
