A local AM has called for the Welsh Government to issue definitive guidance to local authorities and schools to clarify its position on the authorisation of absence during term time for family holidays.
Over recent months there has been a great deal of ambiguity about the process.
Russell George said:
“Welsh Government guidance sets out details to permit 10 days authorised absence for family holidays. However, the ERW Consortium, an alliance of 6 local authorities aimed at delivering school improvement services, has provided contradictory advice in informing schools that they should not authorise holidays during term time. This ambiguity is confusing for schools and parents.
“I agree with the principle that it should be up to individual schools to use their discretion in authorising family holidays during term time.
“Putting the power in the hands of teachers who know the learning needs of their pupils is the right way forward.
“Therefore, this week, I asked the Leader of the House, Jane Hutt, for a Welsh Government statement on this issue to provide definitive guidance and clarity to local authorities, schools and parents.
“I was pleased that the Minister agreed with me that clear guidance is essential and I look forward to a statement from the Minister of Education in due course.”
