The Grade II listed bridge on the B4389, was closed completely to traffic during the winter of 2010/11 for safety reasons but was re-opened for a period to single-lane traffic, while Powys County Council undertook structural repair work on the bridge.
Powys Council has been working on the core strengthening of the bridge since April 2012 and the bridge is scheduled to re-open this autumn.
Commenting, Mr George said:
"As I understand it, the only outstanding work left on the bridge is the final water-proofing and surfacing of the bridge deck, which I'm told is a process that is reliant on sufficient curing of the concrete having taken place.
"If it dries out sufficiently, the bridge could be open in the next couple of weeks and I certainly look forward to a resumption of two-way traffic again.
"The bridge closure has naturally not helped the
general traffic situation in Newtown and I would hope its re-opening will have some effect in easing the traffic chaos.
"I’ve previously raised the issue with speeding along Canal Road with local police, and I hope this is something that local police will be monitoring following the re-opening of the bridge."
